Utility Clearance Surveys
A utility clearance survey is an essential step in avoiding accidental strikes on buried service infrastructure when undertaking excavation or drilling works.
A clearance survey (also known as a service avoidance survey or borehole clearance survey) involves surveying the proposed areas of excavation/drilling using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Electromagnetic Locating (EML) equipment to accurately map the below ground infrastructure. The results are clearly marked on the ground and measured with GPS coordinates so that a digital CAD plan can be supplied as part of the final deliverable. Where underground obstacles are identified within or close proximity to these locations alternative areas can be investigated.
Striking a buried utility can have serious health and safety implications and cause service disruptions, project delays and likely result in additional costs for your project. Damaging a gas pipeline, electrical cable, or water main can cut off essential services to homes, businesses and public facilities leading to inconvenience and economic losses. These expenses can be significant as they may not only include the cost of repair but also potential fines and compensation claims. By conducting a utility clearance survey before breaking ground the risk of costly damages is minimized, saving money in the long run.
