GPR Survey to Locate Ground Beams in a Warehouse

Project Overview

A regular consulting engineer client engaged our services to conduct a comprehensive underground tracing survey at a retail warehouse in Hemel Hempstead, to identify and locate solid concrete ground beams beneath the floor slab. The information was critical for assessing the structural performance of the floor slab to support the installation of a mezzanine floor.

Terrain Surveys were commissioned for the survey, leveraging our expertise in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) survey technology to deliver accurate, non-intrusive results.

The Survey

To locate and map the ground beams our utility survey team surveyed the area using the state of the art Stream DP GPR system, providing high resolution imaging of the sub-surface, identifying buried structures, utilities and geological features. Using the equipment to survey the area on a grid system, allowing full mapping coverage across the warehouse floor area.

Existing floor plans of the warehouse were not available, our survey team produced a basic floor plan, so that the GPR survey data could be accurately presented.

Following the survey the data was post-processed using IQMaps software package for advanced GPR data analysis. Using this data our surveyors were then able to identify and accurately plot the position and depth of the ground beams on the warehouse floor plan, in DWG format.

The Results

In less than one day on site, our utility survey team were able to identify the location, size, and depth of buried concrete beams to a high degree of accuracy. With quick data processing and production of comprehensive CAD drawings, we exceeded our client’s expectations. We efficiently provided the data needed for their structural analysis and design planning.

Client Testimonial

"Many thanks for the very prompt issue of the interpreted GPR survey results.

These are just what we have needed and have supported the belief I had in GPR being the right approach for identifying the likelihood of denser concrete being able to be detected through and under the slab.

These are exactly what we have needed to pass onto our client seeking to take a lease on this unit and have allowed us to commit to engineering advice we have provided to them.”

This project highlights Terrain Surveys ability to deliver high-quality GPR surveys in challenging, operationally active environments. Combining advanced technology with skilled interpretation, the survey provided the client with the essential data they needed to proceed with their project with confidence.

Should you have a requirement for a utility survey or measured survey, Terrain Surveys would be pleased to assist and provide you with a bespoke quotation within 48 hours.
