Overview
Following a detailed utility survey undertaken in September 2025, Terrain Surveys were appointed to carry out a full CCTV condition survey of the foul and surface water drainage systems serving Frimley Park Hospital. The investigation focused on drainage infrastructure located beneath the hospital’s main access road — a critical operational route that needed to remain functional at all times.
Given the live hospital environment and the importance of maintaining uninterrupted access for emergency vehicles, staff and visitors, the project required a carefully planned approach. To minimise disruption and avoid daytime traffic restrictions, the client and Terrain Surveys agreed that the CCTV works would be completed during night-time hours. This strategy allowed the survey to be carried out efficiently while safeguarding hospital operations and delivering programme and cost benefits for the client.
Survey
Terrain Surveys undertook the CCTV investigation across three consecutive night shifts, enabling uninterrupted daytime use of the access road and removing the requirement for full traffic management measures. This approach not only reduced operational risk but also generated savings for the client in both time and cost.
During the night works, our drainage specialists surveyed 26 foul and surface water manholes along with all associated gully and channel connections within the target area. High-resolution CCTV equipment was deployed to inspect pipe interiors, confirm connectivity, identify defects and assess the overall structural and service condition of the drainage network. The surveys were carefully coordinated to maintain safe working practices within the hospital environment while ensuring efficient data capture throughout each shift.
Following completion of the fieldwork, the footage and inspection data were rapidly processed by Terrain Surveys’ in-house team. The CCTV outputs were compiled into a comprehensive condition report, detailing pipe routes, observations, defect grading and recommendations for future maintenance or remediation.
Results
The client received a full and accurate assessment of the foul and surface water drainage systems serving the hospital access road, providing clarity on the condition and performance of a vital piece of infrastructure within a live healthcare environment. By completing the works overnight, Terrain Surveys ensured that hospital operations continued uninterrupted, while the avoidance of extensive traffic management measures delivered tangible savings to the project budget.
All CCTV reports and deliverables were issued within five days of site completion, allowing the client to move quickly into the next stage of planning and decision-making with confidence. The survey data now supports informed maintenance planning, risk management and future works around the hospital estate — helping to maintain resilient drainage infrastructure for a critical public facility.
