Topographical and Measured Building Survey at Brighton Marina

Overview

Terrain Surveys was appointed to undertake a comprehensive Topographical and Measured Building Survey of a former casino building at Brighton Marina, supporting planned redevelopment proposals for the site.

Brighton Marina is a prominent mixed-use waterfront destination in Brighton and Hove, combining residential, leisure, retail and commercial uses. Redevelopment projects within this type of setting require accurate information not only about the building itself, but also the surrounding site levels, access arrangements and nearby infrastructure. For this project, the client needed a detailed and reliable record of both internal and external conditions to support the next stages of design and development.

With programme timescales being an important consideration, Terrain Surveys was required to mobilise quickly and deliver a comprehensive survey package within the client’s required timeframe.

Survey

Terrain Surveys deployed an experienced survey team to site and used our Leica RTC360 laser scanner to efficiently capture detailed point cloud data across both the internal and external areas of the building.

The measured building survey focused on providing a highly accurate representation of the existing structure, including the primary portal frame steelwork, concrete floor joint layouts and all ground floor slab trenches. Comprehensive building geometry and structural features were also recorded to ensure the design team had the level of detail required for future redevelopment proposals.

Externally, the topographical survey captured accurate site levels, surrounding features and relevant infrastructure to provide a complete understanding of the wider site context.

Following completion of the fieldwork, the captured data was processed by Terrain Surveys’ experienced in-house survey and CAD team, who produced a detailed suite of drawings in accordance with the client’s specification and programme requirements.

Results

The client received a comprehensive and coordinated survey package covering both the existing building and its surrounding external environment. The measured building drawings provided detailed information on structural elements, floor construction and existing geometry, while the topographical outputs documented site levels and surrounding infrastructure required for wider design coordination.

By combining rapid mobilisation, advanced 3D laser scanning and efficient in-house processing, Terrain Surveys was able to minimise time spent on site while maintaining a high level of accuracy and detail.

The completed survey now provides the project team with a reliable foundation for the proposed redevelopment of the former casino building, supporting informed design decisions and helping reduce uncertainty as the scheme progresses.
