“Do the right thing — that’s what it all comes back to.”

Graham King didn’t set out to be a surveyor. Like many in the industry, he stumbled into it — but once he found it, he never looked back. Starting out as an electrical engineering apprentice, his career path changed dramatically when the events of September 11th turned the aerospace industry upside down. A quick chat with a careers adviser and a bit of proactivity later, Graham landed his first surveying role in 2001 at CSL Surveys — and discovered the perfect balance of working outdoors, problem solving and making a difference.

When the three senior surveyors who trained him left to set up Terrain Surveys, Graham soon followed — drawn by their vision for the future and to build a company on honesty, integrity and growth. From there, he rose steadily through the ranks: from trainee to senior surveyor, then survey manager — a role he helped define — and now Director.

Ask Graham what he’s proudest of and it’s not the job titles — it’s the impact he’s had helping others develop. He’s been instrumental in building Terrain’s management team, shaping new departments, mentoring people into new roles and always asking: how can we do this better? Whether it’s bringing CAD and Revit in-house, supporting trainees, or championing new sales and marketing strategies, Graham’s focus is simple: make a difference and do it right.

These days, he’s at the heart of Terrain’s big decisions — overseeing quoting, operations and strategic growth. As the company expands further into the Midlands and beyond, Graham’s mission is clear: grow the business, keep quality at the core, and make sure Terrain’s reputation for doing things properly holds strong for the next twenty years.

    His favourite kit?

The total station and dumpy level — old-school tools that prove you can’t cut corners when it comes to accuracy.

    Dinner guests?

Sir David Attenborough and Arnold Schwarzenegger — both masters of reinvention and determination.

    Dream job if not surveying?

A vet, ideally protecting wildlife in Africa.
Surveyor, manager, mentor, leader — Graham’s story is proof that the right culture lasts when good people build it, live it and pass it on.
