Phill Goddard
CAD Manager
phill@terrainsurveys.co.uk“Details matter — get them right, and everything else follows.”
Phil Goddard is part of the furniture at Terrain Surveys — in the best possible way. The company’s second-ever hire, he’s been with Terrain for nearly two decades and has helped shape it into what it is today.
Phil’s journey began, like many, by chance — a visit to a careers advisor after college turned up two options: farming or surveying. He chose surveying because he “didn’t fancy early mornings” — only to find himself regularly on site before 7am. But the early starts never put him off: he discovered a passion for turning raw site data into clear, accurate drawings — and that passion led him to build and lead Terrain’s dedicated CAD department.
In the early days, Terrain didn’t have a CAD team — surveyors did it all. As technology evolved and laser scanners made site work quicker, Phil saw where the real expertise would be needed: in the office, interpreting and presenting the data correctly. Today, he leads a close-knit team of CAD technicians, many of whom, like him, have grown with the company from trainee to expert.
Phil’s known for his eagle eye — nothing leaves the door without his quality stamp. QA and drawing checks are still his favourite part of the job, keeping him hands-on with the detail that first drew him in. His philosophy is simple: any kit can capture a scan, but it’s what you do with the data next that sets you apart.
Away from the layers and lines, you’ll find Phil at the gym — his second passion and, in another life, his dream job. Or, more likely, enjoying a curry (ideally lamb tikka, with all the sides) — a meal that’s even turned up on one of his favourite site projects.
