The air base was opened in 1940 and played a key role in World War II as a bomber base. Each fighter pen protected an individual Spitfire or Hurricane and its crew, whilst on the ground. During the Cold War, the base was home to Jaguar jet fighters and search and rescue helicopters.
Having purchased the site from the MOD following its closure in 2006, Norfolk County Council are working with developers on potential plans for a museum and heritage centre.
