Architectural Features Captured by 3D Laser Scanning

Terrain produced topographical surveys and building elevations within the garden and courtyard. By means of 3D laser scanning, they also delivered a comprehensive set of floor and ceiling plans, as well as internal elevations and sections of the highly ornate Livery Hall, where the most important company events are held.

The Livery Hall was enlarged to its present size by Herbert Williams in the 1860s and boasts highly elevated and ornate ceilings, together with impressive architectural features, such as its 28 marble columns in between which the Drapers’ Company displays its collection of royal portraits.

John Lane, Director at Terrain Surveys, comments: “The high elevations and architectural features created additional work back in the office, despite the scanning on-site being straightforward and only taking 2 days to complete. The scan data was instrumental in plotting the architectural features accurately and we were very pleased with the results”.

The Livery Hall is full of history. The tradition that the members of the Company dine together dates from 1371 when it was ordained that ‘the brotherhood shall hold their feasts wheresoever they shall agree in common’. Thanks to the work undertaken by Terrain Surveys, future seating plans and conservation project designs will always be accurate.
