Overview
Terrain Surveys were commissioned to undertake a detailed 3D laser scanning and Revit modelling survey of the roof spaces at Guy’s Hospital in Guy’s Hospital. This project formed a continuation of previous survey works carried out by Terrain at the site, further strengthening our understanding of the hospital’s infrastructure and enabling a seamless approach to additional data capture.
As part of ongoing development and upgrade plans within the hospital estate, the client required highly accurate information relating to the roof voids and external roof areas. These spaces often contain complex structural elements and service routes, making detailed modelling essential for planning, coordination and future works. By building on an existing survey framework, Terrain Surveys were able to mobilise quickly and deliver an efficient, high-quality solution.
Survey
Leveraging survey control established during our previous project at Guy’s Hospital, the team was able to return to site and commence work with minimal setup time. This continuity ensured consistency across datasets and allowed for efficient integration with earlier survey outputs.
Using advanced 3D laser scanning technology, our surveyors captured high-density point cloud data across both internal roof voids and external roof spaces. The survey included detailed recording of otherwise difficult-to-access areas, ensuring that all structural elements within the roof spaces were accurately captured. Despite the challenging environment typically associated with confined roof voids, our experienced measured building surveyors were able to carry out the work safely and efficiently.
The captured data was processed into a detailed 3D Revit model, providing a highly accurate representation of the roof structure. Particular attention was given to modelling structural components such as purlins, beams and roof joists, ensuring the model could be relied upon for design coordination and future development works.
Results
The client received a comprehensive 3D Revit model of the roof spaces, delivered to a high level of detail and within the required project timeframe. By building on the previous survey work undertaken at Guy’s Hospital, Terrain Surveys ensured consistency across datasets and provided a fully integrated understanding of the building’s structure.
The detailed modelling of the roof voids has enabled the project team to progress development and upgrade plans with confidence, supported by accurate, reliable data. The ability to clearly visualise structural elements and spatial constraints reduces design risk and improves coordination across disciplines.
This project further demonstrates Terrain Surveys’ ability to deliver complex survey solutions within live, high-profile environments — combining technical expertise, efficient mobilisation and high-quality outputs to support critical infrastructure projects.
