Overview
Terrain Surveys was appointed to undertake a comprehensive connectivity and condition survey of the below-ground drainage network serving a school in Harrow.
With the school remaining operational for much of the year, timing was an important consideration. Terrain Surveys was able to mobilise quickly following instruction and complete the survey during the summer holidays, helping to minimise disruption to staff, pupils and the day-to-day running of the site.
The survey was required to provide a clear understanding of the existing drainage infrastructure, including its routing, connectivity, capacity and overall condition. This information would form an important basis for future maintenance planning, drainage modifications and long-term asset management across the school estate.
Survey
Terrain Surveys carried out a detailed CCTV drainage investigation across the site, supported by electronic line tracing to establish the route of the below-ground pipework.
The tracing process also enabled the team to identify previously unknown or concealed manhole chambers. Where practicable, these chambers were exposed to allow full access to the drainage network and support a more complete inspection of the system.
The survey focused on confirming how the foul and surface water drainage networks connected across the site, while also assessing their structural condition and operational performance. By undertaking the works during the summer holiday period, the team was able to work efficiently across the school grounds with minimal impact on normal school activities.
Results
The completed survey and accompanying report provided the client with a comprehensive record of the school’s below-ground drainage infrastructure, including routing, connectivity and condition information.
This data now gives the client a reliable foundation for future maintenance, drainage improvement works and potential redevelopment, helping to support more informed decision-making and reduce uncertainty around existing assets.
The survey also created a valuable long-term record of the drainage network, improving future asset management and giving the school a clearer understanding of the infrastructure serving the site.
